If you’re new to creating websites, there are a few things you should know before you jump in and start building. One, the Comic Sans font is awkward for the title of your website, unless your website is about comics. Two, making everything bold, italic and underlined will not get your point across any better than plain old text. Three, you don’t have to pay a fortune for website building software.

If you’re interested in learning code, you still don’t have to pay for software. There are lots of free programs that do everything the expensive high-end packages do. Here are a few you can try, either for coding or crafting a graphical website design.

NetObjects Fusion Essentials is one of the easiest web design software available. Its whole design process is as simple as dragging-and-dropping the images and boxes you want so it can code it and pop out a finished website. You don’t have to know a string of HTML coding to use this, so it’s user friendly to all ages and skill levels.

WebPlus Starter Edition is another drag-and-drop program. You can use a number of templates, gadgets, blogs and hit counters. It’s completely free and is ready to download at any time — no HTML required.

HTML Kit is for coding websites. It comes with everything the popular Dreamweaver software comes with, but it’s free. It can edit lots of types of code such as CSS, HTML, XHTML, XML, PHP and JavaScript. You can also download dozens of plug-ins to add additional versatility.

If you’re using a non-Windows computer or a computer with less memory, BlueFish might be better for you. It’s an extremely fast coding program and is light weight. It uses up to 35% less memory than other editors and lets you work on multiple projects at once. It can open over 500 documents at once if you’re feeling ambitious and provides lots of plug-ins and full screen editing.
